AirCover

AirCover is Airbnb's protection and support layer for marketplace transactions.

There are two different concepts to understand:

AirCover for Hosts
and
AirCover for guests

They are not the same product and they are not both insurance.

Explain It in 30 Seconds

AirCover for Hosts

Includes elements such as:

  • guest identity verification;
  • reservation screening;
  • $3M Host damage protection;
  • $1M Host liability insurance;
  • $1M Experiences & Services liability insurance;
  • 24-hour safety support. [S11]

AirCover for guests

Provides support when serious home-reservation problems occur, including rebooking help or a full / partial refund depending on the situation. [S12]

Airbnb explicitly says AirCover for guests is not an insurance policy. [S12]

The Problem AirCover Solves

Airbnb has a structural trust problem that a hotel chain does not have in the same form.

The platform coordinates millions of independent suppliers.

Possible failures include:

  • fake identity;
  • risky reservation;
  • property damage;
  • host cancellation;
  • materially inaccurate listing;
  • guest injury;
  • service liability.

A marketplace can grow only if participants believe there is a system for handling failure.

AirCover for Hosts

Identity verification

Airbnb verifies information from booking guests.

Reservation screening

Airbnb uses screening technology to identify certain potentially risky reservations.

Host damage protection

Airbnb says Host damage protection covers up to $3 million for certain guest-caused damage, subject to terms and exclusions. [S11]

Host damage protection is not itself an insurance policy. [S11]

Host liability insurance

This provides up to $1 million in liability coverage in covered situations where a Host is legally responsible for a guest's injury or property loss. [S11]

Experiences & Services liability insurance

AirCover for Hosts also includes liability coverage for covered Experiences and Services. [S11]

AirCover for Guests

AirCover for guests applies to home bookings and can help when:

  • a host cancels;
  • the guest cannot check in;
  • the listing is significantly different from what was advertised;
  • certain serious problems cannot be resolved by the host. [S12]

Airbnb can help the guest find a similar place, subject to availability and comparable pricing, or issue a full or partial refund. [S12]

What AirCover Is Not

It is not a universal guarantee

Programs have:

  • terms;
  • exclusions;
  • eligibility rules;
  • reporting requirements.

AirCover for guests is not travel insurance

It does not replace insurance for unrelated travel disruptions such as lost luggage or a delayed flight. [S12]

Host damage protection is not the same as Host liability insurance

One addresses certain guest-caused damage to host property.

The other is an insurance product for covered liability claims.

Who Uses AirCover?

Home hosts

For property risk and liability support.

Experience and Service hosts

For covered liability protection.

Guests

For serious reservation problems and rebooking / refund support.

What AirCover Depends On

AirCover depends on:

  • identity systems;
  • fraud detection;
  • claims processes;
  • customer support;
  • insurance infrastructure;
  • marketplace data;
  • clear policy rules.

What Depends On AirCover?

AirCover supports the willingness to participate in the marketplace.

A first-time host may ask:

What happens if a guest damages my home?

A first-time guest may ask:

What happens if the listing is fake or the host cancels?

AirCover gives Airbnb a product answer to both concerns.

Why AirCover Matters to Airbnb

Airbnb competes for supply and demand.

Its 10-K explicitly lists host protections, trust and safety, and community support as competitive factors. [S1]

AirCover is therefore not merely a customer-service expense.

It is part of the value proposition used to attract hosts and guests.

What Most People Misunderstand

"AirCover is one insurance policy."

No.

It combines different protection, insurance, screening and support mechanisms.

"AirCover for guests is travel insurance."

No. [S12]

"AirCover means Airbnb owns the risk of the property like a hotel owner."

No.

The host still owns or controls the property and fulfills the stay.

Airbnb provides marketplace protections around that relationship.
