Overview
The American Express Global Network is the infrastructure that authorizes, routes, processes and settles American Express transactions around the world. It is unusual because American Express often participates not only as the network, but also as the issuer and merchant acquirer.
Primary Question
How does the Amex network differ from Visa and Mastercard, and why does controlling more of the payment loop matter?

MERCHANTWhat It Is
The network is the rule set, technology and commercial infrastructure that allows an American Express payment credential to work across merchants, countries and partner institutions.
It handles authorization, transaction routing, settlement and network relationships. [S1]
Who Uses It
The network serves proprietary American Express Card Members, partner-issued Amex Card Members, merchants, merchant acquirers, payment facilitators, issuing partners and technology partners.
Who Pays
Revenue reaches American Express through different routes depending on the transaction. Merchant discount revenue, network partnership revenue and related service fees can all be connected to network activity.
How It Works
A transaction begins with a Card Member attempting payment.
The credential is authorized against the issuing relationship, routed through the American Express network and settled to the merchant through American Express or an acquiring partner.
When Amex issues and acquires directly, it can control more of the experience end to end.
How American Express Makes Money
Network economics are not reported as a single clean 'network fee' business because the company combines issuing, acquiring and network roles.
Discount revenue was $37.4B in 2025. Network partnership revenue is included within service fees and other revenue. [S1]
Strategic Role
The network is the technical and economic spine of American Express.
Without it, Membership Rewards, Amex Offers, merchant-funded benefits, premium card economics and merchant analytics would all sit on top of someone else's payment infrastructure.
How It Connects to the Membership Model
The network turns Membership into something usable at the point of sale.
A benefit-rich card with poor acceptance is weak. Network expansion directly increases the practical value of Membership.
How It Connects to the Integrated Network
This page is the network itself. The key distinction is proprietary vs partner-issued volume.
At year-end 2025, American Express had 86.6M proprietary cards-in-force and 66.2M third-party cards-in-force. [S1]
Scale / Current Position
2025 worldwide network volumes were $1.897T. Third-party / alternative processed volume was $227.2B. By July 2026, Amex acceptance exceeded 190M merchant locations worldwide. [S1][S9]
Why the Product Exists
American Express historically built a closed, integrated card model rather than simply licensing a network to banks. That structure gave it direct customer and merchant relationships and supported a premium-service strategy.
What Makes It Hard to Copy
The hard-to-copy part is not the logo or authorization technology alone.
It is the combination of network scale, direct Card Member relationships, direct merchant relationships, underwriting data, rewards, global acceptance and partner connections.
Main Dependencies
The network depends on uptime, fraud controls, merchant acceptance, partner institutions, regulatory compliance, cybersecurity, settlement liquidity and customer trust.
Competition
Visa and Mastercard are the largest global general-purpose card networks. Discover, domestic networks, wallets, account-to-account systems and real-time payment rails also compete for transactions.
Risks / Weaknesses
A network can lose relevance if acceptance weakens, merchants resist economics, regulators change payment rules, alternative rails bypass cards or major outages damage trust.
How the Product Has Changed
American Express gradually opened its network to third-party issuers and acquirers, particularly internationally. Global Network Services was established in 1997 to broaden distribution. [S6]
2026 Direction
The 2026 emphasis is both broader acceptance and agentic commerce.
American Express is working to make payment capabilities available inside AI ecosystems while preserving fraud protections and Membership benefits. [S28]
Common Misconceptions
“Every Amex card is issued by American Express.” No. Many are partner-issued.
“Amex is just another Visa.” No. Amex often combines network, issuing and acquiring roles.
What Most People Miss
The integrated network is not merely a processing utility. It is the data and coordination layer that lets Amex connect customer value, merchant value, credit and loyalty inside one system.
