How Airbnb Expanded Beyond Homes

Airbnb built its business around one transaction:

book a place to stay

By 2025 and 2026, the company was trying to widen that transaction into something larger:

plan the trip+ book the stay+ book what you do+ book services around the stay+ book more types of accommodation

This is not the first time Airbnb tried to expand beyond homes.

The company had launched Experiences years earlier and explored a wide range of travel businesses before COVID-19 forced a major refocus.

The newer expansion therefore raises a useful business question:

Why is Airbnb expanding again, and what is different this time?

1.Homes created the customer relationship

Airbnb's core marketplace gives it a powerful moment of customer intent.

A traveler who books a home has already told Airbnb:

where they are going
when they are going
who may be traveling
how long they are staying
what kind of accommodation they prefer

That makes a home booking more than one transaction.

It can become the beginning of a trip relationship.

The strategic opportunity is obvious:

If Airbnb already knows the trip,
can it help sell more of the trip?

2.Experiences were the first major step beyond accommodation

Airbnb introduced Experiences before the pandemic.

The basic idea was:

Local people can provide not only places to stay but also things to do.

This extended the host model.

HOME HOST
supplies a place

EXPERIENCE HOST
supplies an activity

The marketplace mechanism is similar:

  • independent supply;
  • listing;
  • discovery;
  • booking;
  • payment;
  • reviews;
  • platform fee.

But the operational product is different.

A stay can last several nights.

An experience has:

  • a time slot;
  • capacity / seats;
  • host presence;
  • local quality variation.

That is why Airbnb now counts Seats Booked alongside Nights Booked. [S1]

3.COVID-19 interrupted the expansion

Before 2020 Airbnb was pursuing a much broader travel vision.

The pandemic forced a reversal.

Brian Chesky's 2020 employee memo said Airbnb would return to its roots and scale back or pause businesses including:

  • Transportation;
  • Airbnb Studios;
  • Hotels;
  • Lux. [S7]

This matters because the post-2024 expansion is not a continuous story.

It is:

expand
→ crisis
→ refocus
→ rebuild core
→ expand again

The second expansion happened after Airbnb strengthened its core marketplace and became a much larger public company.

4.The 2025 release rebuilt Experiences around the trip

In May 2025 Airbnb launched a redesigned Experiences product in 650 cities. [S8]

The product included activities hosted by local experts and public figures across categories such as:

  • food;
  • culture;
  • outdoors;
  • arts;
  • wellness.

The commercial logic is different from the original accommodation marketplace but uses the same customer relationship.

Airbnb knows location + dates
        ↓
Airbnb can recommend experiences during that trip

The home booking becomes distribution for another marketplace category.

5.Services expanded the host idea again

The 2025 Summer Release also introduced Airbnb Services in 260 cities. [S8]

Initial categories included services such as:

  • chefs;
  • prepared meals;
  • photography;
  • massage;
  • spa;
  • personal training;
  • beauty services.

This changed the supply concept again.

Airbnb Services

The common marketplace capability is not real estate.

It is Airbnb's ability to bring demand, payment and trust to fragmented local supply.

6.The app was redesigned around a broader trip

Airbnb's 2025 release described an all-new app designed to bring homes, experiences and services together. [S8]

That product decision matters.

If each new category lived in a separate product, Airbnb would simply own multiple marketplaces.

The larger ambition is to make them feel like one trip system.

HOME
  ↓
TRIP ITINERARY
  ├── EXPERIENCE
  ├── SERVICE
  └── MESSAGING / BOOKING

The app therefore becomes the coordination layer across categories.

7.2026 added partner services, not only Airbnb hosts

In 2026 Airbnb expanded Services into categories such as:

  • car rentals;
  • grocery delivery;
  • airport pickup;
  • luggage storage. [S9][S10]

These do not all follow the same host model as a chef or photographer.

Some rely on external partners and existing service networks.

That changes the architecture of the marketplace.

Earlier:

Airbnb recruits independent host
→ host supplies service

Now, in some categories:

Airbnb integrates partner service
→ partner supplies service

Airbnb is therefore broadening from a host marketplace toward a travel-distribution layer.

8.Hotels became part of the supply strategy again

Airbnb began adding curated boutique and independent hotels more aggressively in 2026. [S9]

This is strategically interesting because hotels were historically framed as the incumbent Airbnb was disrupting.

But marketplace logic changes the relationship.

A hotel can be:

competitor for traveler demand
and
supplier on Airbnb

By Q2 2026:

  • hotel nights remained a single-digit share of Airbnb nights;
  • hotel nights were growing at roughly three times the rate of homes;
  • approximately 35% of first-time hotel guests later booked a home. [S10]

That suggests hotels can serve as an acquisition and supply-expansion tool rather than simply a separate business.

9.The company is testing cross-category economics

The strategic promise of a broader trip marketplace is cross-sell.

The same traveler can potentially generate several transactions:

HOME
$ booking

+

EXPERIENCE
$ booking

+

SERVICE
$ booking

+

HOTEL / CAR / AIRPORT / GROCERY
$ booking

This could improve the lifetime value of an Airbnb customer without requiring every new transaction to begin with new customer acquisition.

But the economics are not yet proven at Airbnb's existing scale.

Its 2025 10-K says substantially all revenue and bookings still came from stays. [S1]

The company is therefore building the broader model before it has replaced the core model.

10.Experiences are showing early supply growth

Airbnb said Experiences supply was up approximately 80% year over year in Q2 2026. [S10]

That is evidence of supply-side expansion.

It does not by itself prove that Experiences will become a large revenue business.

The next commercial questions are:

Will enough guests book them?
Will hosts earn enough to keep supplying them?
Will quality remain high?
Will the category drive repeat Airbnb use?

Marketplace supply growth is necessary but not sufficient.

11.AI is being used to make the broader marketplace navigable

A larger inventory universe creates a discovery problem.

If Airbnb offers:

  • millions of homes;
  • hotels;
  • Experiences;
  • Services;
  • partner travel products;

then traditional filters become harder to scale as the only interface.

By 2026 Airbnb was using AI for:

  • conversational search;
  • listing detail extraction;
  • host recommendations;
  • travel suggestions;
  • customer support. [S10]

The business logic is:

more categories
→ more complexity
→ greater need for personalization and intelligent discovery

AI therefore supports the marketplace-expansion strategy rather than existing as an unrelated technology feature.

12.The expansion changes Airbnb's competitive set

Homes primarily put Airbnb against:

  • vacation-rental platforms;
  • hotels;
  • OTAs.

A broader trip product adds competition with:

  • experience platforms;
  • travel agencies;
  • car rental platforms;
  • service marketplaces;
  • search engines;
  • AI trip planners.

Every new category increases the addressable transaction opportunity.

It also increases the number of businesses Airbnb must compete with and integrate.

13.The strategic question is whether Airbnb can own more of the trip

The post-2025 strategy can be reduced to one question:

Can Airbnb turn a strong accommodation relationship
into a broader travel relationship?

The mechanism is:

HOME BOOKING
creates trip context
        ↓
TRIP CONTEXT
improves discovery of other products
        ↓
MORE TRANSACTION CATEGORIES
increase engagement and potential monetization
        ↓
MORE REASONS TO OPEN AIRBNB
strengthen direct customer relationship

If it works, Airbnb becomes less dependent on a single category.

If it does not, the company remains primarily a homes marketplace with useful adjacent products.

As of the research cutoff, the evidence still supports the second description economically:

Homes remain the core; expansion is the strategic bet.

Five Things That Changed in the Second Expansion

1. Core first

The new expansion followed years of rebuilding the marketplace after COVID-19.

2. Services, not just activities

Airbnb added personal and travel services beyond Experiences.

3. Partner supply

Not every new service has to come from an Airbnb-style individual host.

4. Hotels are being absorbed into the marketplace

The company is becoming less ideologically tied to "homes versus hotels."

5. AI is becoming the discovery layer

A broader marketplace needs better ways to match users with a much larger set of options.

Then vs. Now

What Most People Miss

The expansion is not mainly about Airbnb becoming a conglomerate of travel products.

The deeper strategy is distribution.

Airbnb already has a user at a moment of high travel intent.

The company is asking:

What else can be distributed through that relationship?

That is the same logic used by many platforms:

win one high-value customer relationship→ add adjacent transactions around it

The challenge is that every new category has different supply, quality, regulation and operational needs.

A marketplace that is excellent at homes is not automatically excellent at massage, restaurants, car rentals or hotels.

The second expansion will therefore be judged by whether Airbnb can reuse its platform advantages without losing product quality.
