Resy

Overview

Resy is a restaurant reservation and hospitality-technology company acquired by American Express in 2019. It became the core digital dining platform through which Amex connects restaurants, diners and Card Member benefits.

What the Company Built

Resy built restaurant discovery, reservation, guest-management and hospitality tools. It created a consumer destination for finding restaurants while also selling technology to operators.

What Problem It Solved

Restaurants need software to manage demand, tables and guests. Diners need discovery and reservations. Premium Card Members want access to scarce inventory and memorable experiences.

Why American Express Bought It

American Express already had large dining spend and premium customers. Resy let the company participate before the payment moment—when the customer decides where to eat.

The Strategic Gap

BEFORE RESY
card-linked dining rewards / events
BUT
no owned booking layer

AFTER RESY
discovery + booking + benefits + payment

What Amex Gained

Amex gained a restaurant software platform, reservation inventory, diner accounts, hospitality relationships and a new digital surface for premium Membership.

How It Fits the Parent Company

Resy sits between Global Dining, premium card benefits and Merchant Services. A restaurant can be a software customer, an Amex-accepting merchant and a destination for Card Member benefits.

Integration Logic

American Express linked eligible Card Members to Global Dining Access, dining credits and exclusive reservations. Resy later became the consumer layer into which Tock inventory would be integrated.

Customer Value

Card Members gain discovery, hard-to-book reservations, credits and special access on eligible products.

Merchant / Business Value

Restaurants gain software, demand generation and access to a large population of high-spending diners.

Revenue / Economic Role

Resy is not a separately reported material revenue segment. The economic logic includes software revenue, restaurant demand, dining spend, premium-card differentiation and retention.

Data / Technology Role

Reservation intent can sit upstream of transaction data. The combination creates the potential to understand the journey from discovery to booking to payment, subject to privacy and product controls.

Competition

OpenTable, SevenRooms, Yelp, direct reservation tools and restaurant POS ecosystems compete for restaurant and diner relationships.

Risks / Limits

Restaurants can use multiple platforms, diners can book directly and reservation access can lose exclusivity if supply is not differentiated.

What Changed After Acquisition

Resy shifted from a standalone hospitality startup into a strategic Membership asset backed by American Express distribution.

2026 Position

In 2026 Resy announced that Tock venues would become bookable through Resy, expanding the consumer destination to more than 25,000 venues. [S18]

Why It Deserves a Separate Page

Resy materially changed the boundary of Amex. Dining became an owned digital platform rather than only a category of benefits.

What Most People Miss

The acquisition was not mainly about earning reservation software fees. It was about connecting premium diners and restaurants in a way that reinforces the payment network.
