Overview
Tock is a reservation, table-management and event-ticketing technology company acquired by American Express from Squarespace in 2024.
What the Company Built
Tock built reservation, table, event and prepaid-experience software used by restaurants, wineries, hotels and other hospitality venues.
What Problem It Solved
Traditional reservation systems are optimized for standard table bookings. Fine dining, wineries and experiential venues often need deposits, prepayment, ticketing and more flexible inventory.
Why American Express Bought It
American Express wanted to deepen Resy, expand premium venue supply and offer more operating software to hospitality businesses.
The Strategic Gap
RESY
strong diner discovery + restaurant reservations
+
TOCK
experiences + wineries + operational flexibilityWhat Amex Gained
Approximately 7,000 venue relationships at acquisition, strong fine-dining and winery exposure, event-ticketing features and additional hospitality software. [S19]
How It Fits the Parent Company
Tock expands American Express Global Dining and strengthens the merchant side of the dining ecosystem.
Integration Logic
In 2026 Amex said Tock venues would move into the Resy consumer experience while Tock restaurant-management software would continue inside the Resy product suite. [S18]
Customer Value
Diners gain access to more restaurants, tasting menus, winery experiences and special events through one discovery / booking destination.
Merchant / Business Value
Hospitality operators retain tools for table management, ticketing and guest operations while gaining access to Amex / Resy demand.
Revenue / Economic Role
As with Resy, direct software economics are only part of the value. The platform can improve premium-card value and channel dining spend to Amex merchants.
Data / Technology Role
Tock expands guest, booking and event data that can inform hospitality CRM and discovery features.
Competition
OpenTable, SevenRooms, direct ticketing tools, winery software and integrated POS / hospitality systems compete across these workflows.
Risks / Limits
Integrating brands can alienate existing operators or users. Venue software is operationally sticky but highly competitive.
What Changed After Acquisition
Tock moved from Squarespace ownership into American Express Global Dining and then toward a Resy-centered consumer identity.
2026 Position
By summer 2026, Amex planned to decommission Tock's consumer app / site and expose Tock venue inventory through Resy while retaining Tock software. [S18]
Why It Deserves a Separate Page
It materially expands the supply and software side of the dining platform.
What Most People Miss
The acquisition is about merchant technology as much as consumer reservations. It makes Amex's dining strategy more like vertical software plus a premium demand network.
