What Blackwell is
Blackwell is not one single graphics card.
It is an architecture used across a family of NVIDIA processors and systems.
Blackwell-based products are designed for workloads such as:
- training large AI models;
- AI inference and reasoning;
- data processing;
- scientific computing;
- simulation;
- other accelerated data-center workloads.
Why an architecture matters
A computing architecture defines many of the underlying design choices used across a generation of processors and systems.
NVIDIA then combines those processors with:
- high-speed memory;
- NVLink interconnects;
- networking;
- CPUs in some configurations;
- system designs;
- CUDA and other software.
The result can be anything from an individual accelerator to a rack-scale AI system.
Blackwell and AI infrastructure
Large AI models increasingly require many accelerators to work together.
Because of that, performance is no longer determined only by a single GPU.
Communication between GPUs, memory capacity, networking, power use, cooling, software, and system design all become important.
Blackwell reflects NVIDIA's broader shift from selling processors toward designing complete AI infrastructure.
Systems based on Blackwell can appear in cloud data centers, enterprise AI systems, and NVIDIA's own DGX product family.
Blackwell and networking
NVIDIA's data-center strategy also depends on networking.
Its 2020 acquisition of Mellanox Technologies expanded NVIDIA's expertise in high-performance interconnects.
This matters because modern AI clusters may connect very large numbers of accelerators.
Compute and networking therefore have to be designed together more closely than in many traditional computing systems.
Blackwell's place in NVIDIA history
Blackwell represents a later stage of the transition described in How NVIDIA Became an AI Company.
The company began with PC graphics, opened GPU computing through CUDA, moved into specialized AI systems such as DGX, added high-performance networking through Mellanox, and eventually developed rack-scale computing platforms around architectures such as Blackwell.
Blackwell and Blackwell Ultra
Blackwell Ultra is an extension of the Blackwell generation aimed at newer AI workloads and larger-scale reasoning and inference.
The exact products and system configurations vary, so BizTear should explain Blackwell primarily as a platform generation rather than maintain a fast-changing catalog of every SKU.
What comes after Blackwell?
NVIDIA has announced Rubin as the next major data-center computing generation after Blackwell.
BizTear should create a standalone /products/rubin/ page only after Rubin becomes sufficiently important and source material is stable enough to support an evergreen page.
